Years and years ago, before homes and businesses could be found on the streets of Klamath Falls, the Klamath Indians' simple dwellings stood next to the woods and close to the water. They were the first inhabitants of this land and they called it Iwauna or Yulalona because of the way the Link River would flow upstream instead of downstream when the south wind would puff its cheeks and blow hard.
After some time the white settlers came and set up their settlements nearby. The train of progress rode steadily along through the area and in 1867 the Town of Linkville was established by George Nurse. It was named such because it was situated at the mouth of Link River. Nearly three decades later, in 1893, the name of the town was changed to Klamath Falls and in 1905 it was incorporated as a city.
The population of the city was on a constant rise. This increase was attributed to the coming of the railroad and the flourishing economy spurred by timber. Regarded as the fastest growing city of the state in the 1920s, the demand for timber dwindled down during the Great Depression.
Looking back through time, one begins to understand the beginnings of Klamath Falls commercial and income producing property and the forces that shaped it. Today this city has an immense appreciation for nature and is a special place to call home.
