Klamath County: Demographics and the People

During Klamath County's earlier years, it was noted that the population amounted to only 2,444 residents, composed of a rough mix of Klamath natives and white settlers. During that period, Klamath County's government was composed of a county judge, two county commissioners, clerk, treasurer, coroner, surveyor, clerk, and sheriff.

Presently, the populace of this region is radically different from those of the County's early days. With at least 63,800 residents living in Klamath County, one eventually discovers that this place is occupied by some of Oregon's most congenial people. And with the Klamath Indian Tribe and Reservation, much of the region's extraordinary heritage is lovingly preserved. Originally established in 1864, the Klamath Tribe was once abolished by the government in 1961, but the tribal government was later reinstituted. Eventually, the federal government officially recognized the Klamath Tribe in 1986, and today, around 2,370 tribe members still reside in the county.

Because of the Klamath Indian Tribe and Reservation, much of what could have been lost into the reaches of a forgotten history has been retrieved, and the residents of Klamath County enjoy not just the beauty of the region's landscape, but also the presence of a heritage that is uniquely theirs.
