Chiloquin History

As with Klamath County itself, the City of Chiloquin possesses a history as rich as its terrain. Named after an old Native American war chief, Chief Chay-lo-quin, the town was originally a bivouac for a group of Klamath Indians before the city's first white settlers finally arrived. It was in 1826 when Peter Skeen Ogden, along with his company of trappers, first came to the area. During that period, they bartered and traded with the Klamaths in the region for their daily necessities, including food and some clothing.

Not long after a railroad was constructed north of Klamath Falls, Chiloquin became a more accessible point for trade, and The Chiloquin Mercantile and the Chiloquin Warehouse were some of the first business establishments put up in the area. Eventually, a post office was built in the young town, and Chiloquin's transformation continued well into the next century. Once a field dotted with a paltry number of tents and cabins, the town soon became a busy trading post, with at least 40 trains plying a route that included Chiloquin.

Although considerable progress has come upon this little town in Klamath Falls, Chiloquin real estate hasn't forgotten its special heritage, and remains as one of the county's most scenic and quaint towns. Apart from its intricate history, Chiloquin has distinguished itself as the best place in Klamath County to live a most restful life in.
